5 Ways to Make Your Pet’s Life Better
Our pets offer us endless entertainment, comforting companionship, and last but not least, unconditional love. As a caring pet owner, or as some would say pet parent, we want to be able to provide the best life possible for our buddy. Whether they’re feathered, furry, or scaled, I think it’s safe to say that we try our best to strengthen our bond with our animal companions. Our pets are more than animals and we cherish them as if they are members of your family. Consider implementing these 5 essential ways you can make your pet’s life better.
First – Prioritize Hydration and Nutrition
Proper hydration and nutrition are the foundation of good health. Though this may seem like it would be an obvious part of your pet’s daily routine, it’s not the case for all pets. Not only is fresh water and a balanced diet the cornerstone of your pet’s nutrition, cleaning their bowls daily will allow you to carefully monitor your pet’s water and food intake.
- Fresh Water, Always: Many health issues are caused by dehydration and a part of making our pet’s life better is keeping them in good health. Aim to refresh your pet’s water bowl at least once a day. More than once if the weather is warm (or if your pet’s had an active day). Consider purchasing a pet fountain. A pet fountain will encourage drinking, and it will keep the water moving. Moving water will help to reduce any build-up of algae in your pet’s water supply.
- Nutritious Meals, Twice Daily: In most cases, it is ideal to provide your pet with two scheduled meals during the day. Generally, feeding your pet twice a day can help them with their digestion and maintain a healthy weight. If you’re unsure of which food is the best option for your pet, you can always consult with your vet. They should be able to offer you recommendations based on your pet’s breed, age, and activity level. You’ll also want to monitor how much they eat and adjust their meals to avoid obesity. This can lead to health issues and additional expenses.
Second – Regular Exercise and Mental Stimulation
In the same way we as human beings experience a boost in our health with fitness, it’s important that we don’t forget to provide our pets with consistent physical activity. Not only do they need physical activity, they also need mental stimulation to prevent them from boredom. Embrace the idea of fostering a routine in which your pet’s daily activities improve their overall physical and mental well-being.
- Tailored Physical Activity: Similar to how age and breed help with our pet’s food choice, we should also consider their age and breed when determining their physical activity. Walks or runs are crucial for dogs. And depending on their age/breed they may need 30 minutes, or an hour of exercise. Having a backyard can be useful in providing your dog a safe area to explore and play. However, if you don’t have a backyard available to you, indoors or even a park will also provide sufficient space for your dog to exercise. Cats often benefit from any interactive play that mimics hunting. Toys similar to feather wands, cat tunnels, or laser pointers provide cats with physical activity. A cat’s age/breed will also determine how much and how often they need daily exercise.
- Beyond the Physical: Exercising your pet mentally is just as important as exercising them physically. In the same way humans need mental stimulation for their well-being, our pets also need mental stimulation. Mental exercise can help your pet stay mentally sharp and engaged. It can also bring content in helping your pets avoid boredom, which can lead to destructive behaviors (chewing, excessive barking, scratching). A great option to consider for incorporating mental exercise for your pet would be a puzzle feeder. Puzzle feeders challenge your pet to work and find their food, it also turns mealtime into a fun and rewarding game. Keep in mind that a mentally tired pet is often a happy and well-behaved pet.
Third – Create a Calm and Serene Sanctuary
We all need a space to cozy up and unwind, and so do our pets. Our pets need a haven where they can feel safe, secure, and retreat when needed. Your pet having a designated area can promote comfort and help reduce their day-to-day stress. It can be like their own private apartment where they escape the chaos of the day (such as, noises from the vacuum, loud house guests, enthusiastic children, or other uncomfortable disruptions).
- A Place of Their Own: This could be a comfortable crate lined with soft blankets, a multi-level cat tree that looks out of a window (preferably one with lots of sunlight), or a cozy dog bed in a peaceful corner of a doggy play pen. It’s important for your pets to have a reliable and comfy space where they won’t be bothered or disrupted.
- Comfort and Privacy: Ensure that their space is away from busy areas if they like quiet. Over time, this space can serve as a private area where they can mentally recharge and obtain physical comfort. You’ll also want to make sure that your pet’s serene sanctuary provides enough warmth or coolness based on your pet’s needs. Also, be mindful of how your pet chooses to use this space. If they ignore the blanket you place in their bed, but they love laying in your laundry basket, then adjust their space and replace the bed with a soft liner in there. This will serve as an important part of their daily routine.
Fourth – Diligently Pet-Proof Your Living Environment
Although accidents do occur, many can be avoided by taking proactive measures to pet-proof your house. You can avoid a lot of stress, and possible veterinary expenses, by taking the time to consider your surroundings from your pet’s point of view.
- Identify and Remove Hazards: Recognize and eliminate risks: Move through your house at your pet’s eye level. Are there any poisonous plants nearby? (Sago palms for dogs, lilies for cats, etc.). Are pharmaceuticals, cleaning products, and human foods (such as avocado or chocolate) kept in a secure location?
- Secure Small Objects: Small objects that can cause internal blockages or choke hazards include hair ties, rubber bands, coins, and children’s toys. Make sure to store them in safe drawers or containers. Additionally, electrical cords ought to be covered or fastened to avoid.
Fifth, lastly – Cultivate Connection Through Quality Time
Being there and interacting with your pet is arguably the most important way to improve their quality of life. These times of affection and connection form the foundation of your relationship.
- Daily Interactions Are Key: Make time every day for one-on-one conversations. This could be gentle grooming, a passionate play session with their favorite toy, a snuggle on the couch, or just quiet company while you read or work.
- Strengthen Your Bond: In addition to meeting your pet’s emotional needs, these times of shared attention help to fortify your special bond with them. Positive interactions, on a regular basis, help you gain their trust and gain a deeper understanding of their needs and personality. Keep in mind that a happy pet means a happy owner!
